Since its foundation, the society has undertaken a variety of fieldwork projects. During the 1960s, it was closely involved in the excavations at Blachorse Road in Letchworth Garden City, an important prehistoric site discovered when the industrial units were being constructed. In the 1980s, the development of the Cloathall Common estate in Baldock was the main focus of its efforts, and in the early 2000s, the discovery of a temple treasure at Ashwell End led to several seasons of fieldwork. The society is currently working with Carenza Lewis of the University of Cambridge on the excavation of numerous test-pits across the parish of Pirton, to the west of Hitchin.
