Excavation, 1975

During the summer drought of 1975, a farmworker on his tractor noticed parch-marks in the growing crop and decided to investigate by digging a hole. He uncovered a grave with more than one skeleton, which he reported to Letchworth Museum and subsequently Gil Burleigh led a team from the Society to investigate further. Trial excavation revealed a ditched enclosure containing a small late Roman inhumation cemetery. Several graves were uncovered, including one which contained the bones of five adults; only the lowest was still articulated but the skulls of the four previous occupants were arranged in pairs either side of the final occupant’s head.
